BSc Nursing (Child)
About this course
Child nursing is a demanding and deeply rewarding field, requiring practitioners who can combine clinical expertise with the particular sensitivity that working with children and young people demands. Children are not simply small adults; their physiological needs, their communication styles, and the emotional dynamics of their care are distinct, and nurses who specialise in this area develop a correspondingly distinctive set of skills and knowledge. This three-year full-time degree at the University of Leeds prepares you to become a registered nurse with the expertise to care for children and young people across a range of clinical settings. You will study the theory and practice of child health nursing, developing your understanding of child development, paediatric pharmacology, family-centred care, and the management of acute and long-term conditions. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to experience healthcare systems and child nursing practice in another country, which deepens your professional perspective and adaptability. Throughout the degree, your learning integrates academic study with substantial clinical practice, building the confidence and competence that safe, effective nursing requires. The Leeds programme takes an innovative approach to making this pathway accessible, supporting you through the challenging transition into professional nursing. On qualifying, you will be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a children's nurse, opening doors to roles in hospitals, community settings, specialist paediatric units, school nursing, and mental health services for children and young people. Many graduates go on to develop specialisms in areas such as oncology, neonatal care, or disability nursing, and further study at postgraduate level can lead to advanced practice roles, clinical leadership, or research careers within child health.
