About this course

Learning disability nursing is a specialist nursing field dedicated to supporting people with learning disabilities to achieve their fullest possible health and wellbeing, and to live as independently and inclusively as possible within their communities. Nurses in this field work in partnership with individuals, their families and carers, advocating for the rights and dignity of people who may face significant barriers to accessing appropriate healthcare. The role requires strong communication skills, creativity, compassion and a commitment to person-centred care and social inclusion. At Swansea University, this three-year full-time programme prepares you for registration as a learning disability nurse, developing the skills and experience needed for a rewarding career in this diverse and essential profession. You will study the health, social and psychological dimensions of learning disability, develop your communication and therapeutic skills, and build the clinical competence needed to work safely and effectively in a range of community and inpatient settings. Substantial clinical placements are central to the programme, placing you in real working environments where you develop your practice under the supervision of registered professionals. Swansea's internationally recognised provision in this field reflects a long-standing commitment to learning disability nursing education and research. Graduates from learning disability nursing programmes are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and can pursue careers in community learning disability teams, residential services, secure services, NHS liaison roles and specialist health facilities. The role of the learning disability nurse has expanded significantly in recent years, with greater emphasis on health facilitation, acute liaison and support for ageing adults with learning disabilities. Postgraduate study, advanced practice roles and specialist practice qualifications are all available for nurses who want to develop their clinical or leadership expertise.
