About this course

Mental health nursing is one of the most demanding and most important specialisms within the nursing profession, combining clinical knowledge with the sustained relational skills that enable therapeutic relationships with people experiencing some of the most difficult challenges a human being can face. Mental health nurses work across inpatient, community and crisis settings, providing assessment, care planning, psychological intervention, medication management and the kind of continuous human presence that can be the difference between a person's stability and a crisis spiralling further. At the University of Derby, this direct entry programme is designed specifically for applicants who already hold a Foundation Degree and are registered as Nursing Associates, offering an 18-month full-time accelerated route to registration as a mental health nurse. The programme is a holistic learning experience that enables you to become emotionally resilient and transformational as a registered nurse, equipping you to meet the unique challenges of mental health nursing at a professional level. The programme includes a foundation year element and a year abroad component, extending the learning to two years overall with the international dimension broadening your understanding of how mental health care is organised and delivered in different national contexts. The direct entry structure means the programme builds on prior professional experience and qualifications, and the accelerated pace reflects the competencies and clinical awareness that registered nursing associates bring to their studies. Graduates register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as mental health nurses and enter a profession with strong demand across NHS community mental health teams, inpatient services, crisis resolution teams, forensic mental health, CAMHS and older adult psychiatry. The profession offers significant scope for specialisation, advanced practice and leadership, and postgraduate study in mental health nursing, psychosocial intervention or clinical psychology offers further pathways for those who wish to develop their expertise.
