About this course

Mental health nursing is a profession concerned with supporting people experiencing a wide range of mental health conditions, from anxiety and depression to psychosis, personality disorders, dementia and substance misuse. It requires a combination of clinical knowledge, therapeutic communication skills, an understanding of the legal and ethical frameworks governing mental health care, and a sustained commitment to working with people who are often in significant distress. Mental health nurses work across inpatient, community and crisis settings, and the demand for skilled practitioners has rarely been greater. At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year full-time programme is offered through the Return to Register Nursing pathway, designed for individuals who have previously held registration as a nurse and wish to return to practice in the mental health field. It leads to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and is structured to recognise prior professional experience while updating your knowledge and skills to current standards. Clinical placements form a substantial part of the programme, providing supervised practice experience across a range of mental health settings. You will study mental health conditions and their treatment, therapeutic approaches, psychopharmacology, the Mental Health Act, risk assessment and safeguarding frameworks. Registered mental health nurses work in NHS trusts, independent and voluntary sector mental health services, community teams, crisis services, forensic settings, primary care and many other contexts. The profession offers clear career development routes into specialist clinical roles, community nursing, advanced nurse practice, management, education and research. Some nurses pursue postgraduate qualifications in cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, psychotherapy, leadership or advanced clinical practice, enabling progression to senior or specialist positions.
