BSc Nursing (Mental Health)
About this course
Mental health nursing is a profession dedicated to supporting people experiencing the full spectrum of mental health difficulties, from common conditions such as anxiety and depression to more complex presentations including psychosis, eating disorders, and personality disorder. Mental health nurses build therapeutic relationships with service users, carry out assessments, coordinate care, administer and monitor medication, and support people toward recovery. The work requires clinical knowledge, emotional resilience, strong communication skills, and a commitment to person-centred care. At the University of Bradford, this three-year full-time programme is available with a foundation year for students who need to build the academic foundation needed for degree-level professional training. From that entry point you will progress into the full mental health nursing programme, developing both the theoretical knowledge and the clinical skills required for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. You will study the psychology and biology of mental health conditions, pharmacology, therapeutic models, safeguarding, and the legal frameworks governing mental health care, including the Mental Health Act. Clinical placements are a significant element of the programme, placing you in real mental health services, from inpatient wards and crisis teams to community mental health and primary care settings, where you will develop your clinical practice under supervision and explore different areas of specialism. Bradford's approach ensures you encounter a range of environments, helping you to identify the settings and populations that interest you most as you build toward your nursing career. Graduates are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and to practise as qualified mental health nurses in the NHS, independent sector, and voluntary organisations. Specialisation in areas such as forensic mental health, substance misuse, child and adolescent mental health, or older adult services is a common career direction. Postgraduate study, including nurse prescribing and advanced practice qualifications, is available for those who wish to develop their expertise further.
