BSc Nursing
About this course
Nursing is one of the most important and rewarding professions in healthcare. Nurses are at the centre of patient care, combining clinical knowledge and technical skill with the human qualities, compassion, communication, and ethical judgement, that make the difference between adequate care and truly excellent care. A nursing degree prepares you to work across a wide range of settings, from hospital wards and operating theatres to community clinics, care homes, schools, and people's own homes. This part-time programme offered by the Open University is delivered through distance learning, making it possible to study nursing at degree level without needing to attend a campus in person. The distance learning format is designed for students who need flexibility in how and when they study, whether because of work, family, geography, or other commitments. The Open University has extensive experience in delivering healthcare education to working professionals and career changers, and the programme is structured to combine academic learning with supervised practice placements that give you the clinical experience required for professional registration. You will develop knowledge of anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, person-centred care, clinical assessment, and the ethical and legal frameworks within which nursing practice takes place. Communication skills, the ability to work in teams, to document care accurately, and to act as an advocate for patients are all developed throughout the programme, reflecting the reality that nursing is as much about relationship and judgement as it is about clinical technique. Graduating from this programme leads to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a qualified nurse, which is the gateway to clinical practice. Qualified nurses work across the NHS, independent healthcare, community services, and international settings. Career progression into specialist nursing, advanced practice, nurse prescribing, management, education, and research are all well-established paths. Nursing is also a profession with strong international demand, offering graduates genuine mobility across healthcare systems worldwide.
