About this course

Paramedic science is a clinical discipline that prepares you to function as a registered health professional at the most challenging interface of care, where patients require urgent assessment and intervention in settings outside the hospital. Paramedics are autonomous practitioners who must integrate scientific knowledge, clinical judgement, and communication skill under conditions that are often uncertain, time-pressured, and emotionally demanding. The discipline draws on anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and pathophysiology, combined with the professional values of a registered health practitioner. At City St George's, University of London, this three-year degree develops the knowledge, clinical skills, and professional confidence you will need to make safe, life-changing decisions for patients at their most vulnerable moments. You will study the pathophysiology of emergency presentations across cardiac, respiratory, neurological, trauma, obstetric, and mental health categories, building the clinical knowledge to respond effectively in each. Practical clinical skills are developed through simulation and supervised clinical placements with ambulance services, where you will apply your learning in real patient encounters with experienced practitioners alongside you. London's position as a major urban centre means that clinical placement experiences are particularly varied and intensive, exposing you to a wide spectrum of patient needs and service environments. On graduation from this programme you will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and to practise as a paramedic. The majority of graduates move into roles with NHS ambulance trusts or independent providers, and many go on to develop specialist clinical skills in critical care, urgent care, or community response. The profession offers structured development pathways leading to advanced clinical practice, clinical team leadership, education, and research roles. The degree also provides a strong foundation for those who wish to progress to further clinical training in nursing, medicine, or other allied health professions.
