About this course

Paramedic science is the study of pre-hospital emergency care, placing you at the most demanding and critical edge of healthcare. Paramedics are often the first clinicians to reach patients in life-threatening situations, required to make rapid clinical assessments, initiate complex treatments, and manage unpredictable environments with limited resources. The discipline draws on anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and clinical decision-making, combined with communication skills and the ability to remain effective under acute pressure. At Portsmouth, this three-year BSc (Hons) degree prepares you to register with the Health and Care Professions Council as a paramedic. You will study the pathophysiology of emergency conditions across cardiac, respiratory, neurological, trauma, and obstetric presentations, building the clinical knowledge to recognise and respond to a wide range of life-threatening situations. Alongside academic learning, you will undertake substantial supervised clinical placements with ambulance services and other pre-hospital providers, developing practical skills in airway management, medication administration, patient assessment, and extrication. The degree also includes a year abroad component, which broadens your understanding of how emergency healthcare systems operate in different national contexts. Throughout the programme you will develop the professional values of a registered health practitioner: a commitment to patient safety, evidence-based practice, and continuous clinical reflection. On graduating, most students move directly into roles with NHS ambulance trusts or independent medical services, working as registered paramedics. As the profession has expanded, so too has the range of roles available, including specialist paramedic posts in critical care, urgent care centres, and community response. Many paramedics go on to take postgraduate qualifications to advance into advanced clinical practice, leadership, education, or research. The degree also provides a strong foundation for those who wish to transition into medicine, nursing, or other allied health professions, where the clinical experience gained as a paramedic is a recognised and valued starting point.
