BSc Pharmacology
About this course
Pharmacology investigates how drugs interact with biological systems: how they reach their targets in the body, how they produce their intended effects, what determines the right dose, and how and why unwanted side effects occur. It sits at the scientific heart of medicine and the pharmaceutical industry, providing the mechanistic understanding that guides the development of new treatments and the rational use of existing ones. As technologies in genomics, computational chemistry, and cell biology have advanced, the field has expanded to encompass a growing range of therapeutic approaches. The three-year full-time Pharmacology BSc at Keele University investigates some of the most exciting areas of current life sciences research, from understanding how drugs work in the treatment of a wide range of conditions to exploring emerging technologies in drug development. Keele's programme is delivered within a Faculty of Medicine, giving you access to a clinically engaged research environment and the opportunity to connect your learning directly to the treatment of real diseases. You will develop the analytical, problem-solving, practical, and professional skills needed for careers in the pharmaceutical industry or biomedical research, as well as the scientific foundation for graduate entry into medicine for those pursuing that route. A sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement options build substantial professional and international research experience into the degree structure. With a typical entry tariff of 120 points, the programme is accessible to students who bring scientific aptitude and genuine curiosity about how medicines work. Graduates pursue careers in pharmaceutical research and development, drug regulatory affairs, clinical trials, medical communications, healthcare science, and postgraduate study in pharmacology, toxicology, or drug discovery.
