About this course
Pharmacy is the healthcare profession concerned with the safe and effective use of medicines, sitting at the interface of chemistry, biology, clinical science, and direct patient care. Pharmacists are medicines experts who support patients, prescribers, and healthcare teams in making the best use of treatments, whether in community pharmacies, hospital settings, GP practices, or industry. The profession has expanded considerably in recent years, with pharmacists taking on more clinical roles including prescribing, patient consultation, and long-term condition management, reflecting both the complexity of modern drug therapy and the need to use healthcare professionals' expertise more fully. At the University of Sheffield, this four-year full-time programme develops the knowledge, clinical skills, and professional attributes you need to qualify as a pharmacist and support patients across a variety of settings. You will study pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacology, clinical pharmacy, medicines management, and communication and consultation skills, building both the scientific understanding of how drugs work and the person-centred skills to use that knowledge in real clinical encounters. A sandwich year in industry and a year abroad are both available, and work placements are built into the programme, ensuring you gain extensive experience in community, hospital, and other pharmacy settings before graduation. With a typical entry tariff of 152 UCAS points, this is a competitive degree leading to a regulated profession. Graduates complete a one-year pre-registration training year and assessment before registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council. Career destinations include community pharmacy practice, hospital pharmacy, primary care networks, the pharmaceutical industry, academia, and public health. The clinical skills and medicines knowledge the degree develops also open routes into regulatory affairs, medical information, and clinical research in the pharmaceutical sector. Many pharmacists develop specialist expertise in areas such as oncology, mental health, or paediatrics over the course of their career.
