About this course

Pharmacy is the health profession responsible for the safe, effective, and evidence-based use of medicines. Pharmacists are experts in drug therapy who work across hospital and community settings, primary care, industry, and research, advising patients and prescribers, managing complex medication regimens, and contributing to public health. As medicines become more numerous, more complex, and more central to healthcare, the expertise of pharmacists in prescribing, clinical decision-making, and medicines management has become more important than ever. At the University of Brighton, this five-year programme builds the clinical and scientific foundations of pharmacy practice alongside the practical skills and professional judgement required to operate as a registered pharmacist in a range of settings. You will develop competence in prescribing, clinical decision-making, and medicines management, preparing you for all areas of the profession including community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, and industrial pharmacy. The curriculum covers pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, physiology and pathology, clinical pharmacy practice, pharmacokinetics, and the legal and professional frameworks that govern the use of medicines. Clinical placements and practice-based learning are integrated throughout the programme, giving you direct experience in professional settings and developing the patient-facing skills and professional confidence that are essential for a qualified pharmacist. You will work with real patients and with members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, learning to communicate clearly, make sound clinical judgements, and manage medicines safely. On completing the degree and the pre-registration year, you will be eligible to register as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council. Career pathways include community pharmacy, hospital and clinical pharmacy, general practice pharmacy, industry roles in drug development and regulatory affairs, academic research, and clinical education. The five-year programme positions you well for the expanding clinical role of pharmacists in modern healthcare.
