About this course

Philosophy and politics is a pairing with deep intellectual roots, reflecting the fact that the most fundamental questions about how political life should be organised are also philosophical ones. What legitimises political authority? What does justice require of us in distributing rights, opportunities, and resources? How should freedom be balanced against equality, or individual rights against collective interests? These are questions that political practice generates and that philosophy is best equipped to address rigorously. Alongside this conceptual work, the empirical study of politics examines how governments, parties, and institutions actually function, how democratic systems can fail, and what drives political behaviour and change. At Queen's University Belfast this three-year full-time programme provides intellectual training in both disciplines, treating them as complementary and mutually enriching rather than simply parallel. You will develop an in-depth understanding of the ideas that explain the foundations of modern political life, including the conditions for democracy, the sources of political stability and conflict, and the philosophical traditions that have shaped how societies think about justice, rights, and authority. The programme is designed to produce graduates who can think clearly and carefully about contested political and philosophical questions and communicate their reasoning with precision and persuasion. Graduates pursue careers in government, the civil service, politics and policy research, journalism, law, international organisations, think tanks, public affairs, and education. Philosophy and politics is consistently well regarded by employers who value analytical depth and the ability to reason clearly about complex problems. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in philosophy, political science, public policy, or law.
