About this course

Philosophy, ethics and religion together address the most fundamental questions that human thought has pursued: what can we know, what exists, what makes actions right or wrong, and what role does religious belief play in human life and society. Philosophy provides the rigorous analytical tools for engaging with these questions precisely and argumentatively, developing the capacity for sustained critical reasoning that is one of the most transferable outcomes of any university education. Ethics examines the principles and theories that bear on how we ought to act, from individual moral decisions to the large-scale questions of justice, rights and the structure of society. The study of religion brings a different dimension, examining how religious traditions have shaped and been shaped by history, culture, politics and philosophy across civilisations. At the University of Chester this programme includes a foundation year, making it accessible to students who may not have studied these subjects formally before but who have the intellectual curiosity and motivation to engage with them at degree level. A year abroad is also included, giving you the opportunity to encounter different religious, philosophical and ethical traditions from within a different cultural and academic environment. Across the full programme you will engage with the major philosophical traditions from ancient Greece to contemporary analytic and continental thought, with the foundational texts and debates of the world's religious traditions, and with the ethical questions that matter most in public and private life today. Graduates go on to work in a wide range of fields where the capacity for rigorous argument, ethical awareness and cultural sensitivity is valued. Education, law, healthcare ethics, public policy, journalism, counselling, the civil service, social work and religious organisations are all common destinations. Many continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, theology, ethics, law or related disciplines. The combination of analytical training and cultural breadth that this degree provides is a genuine and flexible foundation for a thoughtful career.
