MA Philosophy, Politics and Economics
About this course
Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, widely known as PPE, is one of the most prestigious and intellectually demanding combinations available at undergraduate level, bringing together three disciplines that have deep historical connections and that together provide an exceptionally powerful set of tools for understanding and engaging with the modern world. Philosophy develops rigorous analytical reasoning and the capacity to evaluate arguments critically. Politics examines power, institutions, and the processes through which collective decisions are made. Economics provides the formal models and empirical methods for understanding how resources are allocated and how incentives shape behaviour. At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year, full-time degree is recognised as a springboard for careers in politics, finance, and the media. The three complementary disciplines have developed distinctive methods while remaining in deep conversation with one another, and the degree prepares you to think across all three, understanding not only how modern societies and their political institutions work but how rigorous critical evaluation can bring about significant social and political change. The degree includes a year abroad, extending your academic experience internationally. PPE graduates are consistently among the most successful in competitive entry to demanding careers. Politics, government, the civil service, international organisations, journalism, finance, law, management consultancy, and the charity sector are all common destinations. The analytical breadth and intellectual rigour of the degree are valued wherever complex problems require thinking across disciplinary lines. Postgraduate study in politics, economics, philosophy, law, or public policy is a natural continuation for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or pursue academic research.
