About this course

Philosophy is the discipline that asks the questions other subjects take for granted. What is knowledge, and how do we acquire it? What exists, and what is the nature of the things that exist? What do we owe to each other, and what makes an action right or wrong? What is the relationship between the mind and the body? Philosophy develops the ability to think clearly, argue rigorously, and engage honestly with positions that are difficult or uncomfortable. These capacities are among the most transferable and durable that any degree can offer. At the University of Warwick, one of the UK's leading philosophy departments, this three-year full-time degree engages with all the major branches of the discipline: epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of mind, and logic. You will read canonical texts from across the history of philosophy while also engaging with contemporary philosophical debates, learning to reconstruct and assess arguments with precision and to construct your own positions carefully and clearly. Warwick's philosophy department is known for its breadth and intellectual ambition, and the programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to gain professional experience and to study in another philosophical tradition. Work placement is also available, connecting your academic development to the professional world. Philosophy graduates are among the most adaptable and analytically capable in any discipline. The ability to reason carefully, write clearly, and engage seriously with difficult questions is valued in law, the civil service, management consultancy, journalism, publishing, education, policy, finance, and the creative industries. Many philosophy graduates go on to postgraduate study in philosophy, law, or other analytical disciplines, and some pursue academic careers. The intellectual habits that philosophy develops serve you well in virtually any professional context.
