BA Philosophy with German (with a year abroad)
About this course
Philosophy and German is a combination that has a deep intellectual logic. German is the language of Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Marx, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein: some of the most influential philosophers of the modern period wrote in German, and reading them in translation always involves a degree of loss. The pairing invites you to engage with enduring philosophical questions, about knowledge, ethics, art, consciousness, political life, and the nature of reality, from a genuinely multilingual and cross-cultural perspective. At the University of York, this four-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year with work placement and incorporates work placement opportunities throughout, allowing you to develop professional skills and experience alongside your academic study. The work placement gives you a structured opportunity to apply your skills in a professional context, whether in a German-speaking country, a cultural institution, a research environment, or another setting relevant to your interests. Philosophy at York is taught with rigour and range, covering analytic and continental traditions, ethics, political philosophy, metaphysics, and the philosophy of mind and language. The German element develops your language skills alongside your engagement with German literature, history, and cultural life, with the option to study at beginner, intermediate, or advanced level depending on your prior experience. The programme carries a typical tariff of 152 points. The combination of philosophical training and German language proficiency prepares graduates for a wide range of careers, including law, the civil service, journalism, education, international organisations, management consultancy, and roles in any sector where analytical rigour and cross-cultural communication matter. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, German studies, or related fields. The placement component adds practical experience that employers consistently value and that distinguishes graduates in a competitive labour market.
