About this course

Photography at degree level is far more than a technical training in how cameras work. It is an engagement with one of the most powerful and pervasive visual languages of modernity: the photograph as document, as art, as persuasion, as memory, and as the medium through which most of the world now encounters news, culture, and each other. Studying it seriously means developing both practical craft and critical understanding, learning to make compelling images and to understand the choices, history, and context that give those images meaning. At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year full-time programme develops your photographic practice across a range of genres and contexts while also giving you the theoretical and historical frameworks to understand photography's role in visual culture. You will study documentary and editorial photography, portraiture, fine art photography, and commercial practice, developing technical skills in lighting, darkroom work, and digital post-production alongside conceptual and aesthetic thinking. Critical studies in the history of photography and visual culture complement the studio work, giving you the analytical tools to situate your own practice within a broader tradition. Photography graduates work across a wide range of creative industries and contexts. Commercial photography for advertising, fashion, corporate clients, and editorial use is one major area. Documentary and photojournalism, fine art practice, and photography education are others. Many graduates build portfolio careers combining commissions, personal projects, and exhibition work. Photographic agencies, publishing houses, design studios, and news organisations also employ photographers and visual editors. The digital skills developed in the degree transfer to adjacent fields including video production, content creation, and social media. Postgraduate study in fine art photography or visual culture is available for those who want to develop their practice or academic engagement with the medium.
