About this course

Photography, video, and digital imaging is the study of visual image-making in its multiple contemporary forms: from documentary photography and portrait work to moving image, video art, and the digital tools and processes that now permeate creative and commercial visual practice. The discipline requires both technical skill and conceptual thinking, asking you to develop your eye and your voice as a visual practitioner while also building the craft and technical fluency to realise your intentions. At the University of Sunderland, which houses the Northern Centre of Photography, you will develop your photographic and moving-image practice over three years full-time in purpose-built specialist facilities, guided by staff with professional expertise in the field. You will work across a range of photographic and video practices, developing your technical skills in camera work, lighting, darkroom and digital processing, and video production alongside the critical and contextual understanding that allows you to engage with the history and theory of the medium. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution in a different country and experience a different creative environment. The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points. Graduates work across the full breadth of professional photography and moving image practice. Commercial and editorial photography, documentary and photojournalism, portrait and wedding photography, video production, film and television, advertising and design, and arts and cultural organisations are all common destinations. Many graduates also develop their practice as independent artists, exhibiting in gallery contexts or working on personal documentary and editorial projects. Postgraduate study in photography, documentary practice, fine art, or moving image is also a natural progression for those who want to deepen their work or develop an academic dimension to their practice.
