About this course

Photography at degree level is both a practical discipline and a theoretical one. On the practical side, it develops your command of camera and lighting, darkroom and digital processes, editing, sequencing, and the technical decisions that shape an image. On the theoretical side, it develops your understanding of photography's history, ethics, social role, and the critical frameworks through which photographic work is read and judged. The most effective photographers are both technically skilled and intellectually equipped to understand what their images mean and why they make them. At the University of Westminster, this four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year, which provides an accessible and supportive entry point for students who may not have the exact prior qualifications required for immediate entry to the main degree, or who simply want more time to develop their creative practice before committing to the full programme. The main degree develops your photographic practice across a range of approaches, from documentary and editorial work to fine art and experimental photography, alongside the critical and contextual understanding that gives your practice depth. A sandwich year placement gives you the opportunity to gain professional experience in a photographic, creative, or media context, and work placement activity is integrated throughout the programme. A typical entry tariff of 120 points applies. You will develop a distinct creative voice alongside the professional skills needed to operate in the photographic and creative industries. Critical thinking, visual literacy, and the ability to articulate your work clearly to different audiences are all central to what the degree develops. Graduates go on to work as photographers across editorial, commercial, documentary, and fine art contexts, as well as in related roles in image editing, art direction, visual communications, education, and arts management. Postgraduate study in photography or visual culture supports those seeking deeper specialisation or academic careers.
