About this course

Photography is far more than the mechanics of capturing an image. It is a discipline concerned with seeing, interpreting, and communicating ideas about the world through the medium of light, time, and composition. At its best, photography sits at the intersection of visual art and documentary practice, asking the maker to develop both technical mastery and a clear artistic voice. Studying photography gives you the tools to explore that space with intention and rigour. At York St John University, you will have the freedom to pursue your own artistic interests while building a solid foundation across documentary, editorial, and studio photography. You will work with both film and digital approaches, developing an understanding of how each medium shapes the image and the ideas it carries. The programme encourages you to explore the thinking behind contemporary image making, engaging with debates in visual culture, representation, and the ethics of the photographic gaze. This part-time programme also includes a sandwich year in industry and a year abroad, giving you substantial real-world and international experience alongside your academic study. You will also complete a work placement, connecting your practice to professional contexts. Photography graduates move into a wide range of careers. Commercial and editorial photography, photojournalism, and documentary work are the most direct paths, but the skills you develop extend well beyond them. Graduates work in film and television production, advertising, publishing, gallery and museum curation, arts education, and community arts projects. The analytical and visual communication abilities developed through the degree also open doors in marketing, digital media, and design. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study, including MA programmes in photography, visual arts, or related fields, or pursue further professional development through artist residencies and commissions. The combination of creative, technical, and conceptual skills this degree builds equips you for a professional life in the visual arts and creative industries.
