BSc Physical Education and School Sport
About this course
Physical education and school sport is the academic and professional discipline concerned with how physical activity is taught, organised and promoted in educational settings, and with the broader role that sport plays in the physical, social and emotional development of young people. PE teachers are responsible not just for developing fitness and movement skills but for fostering positive attitudes to physical activity that can last a lifetime, for promoting teamwork, resilience and wellbeing, and for identifying young people with exceptional sporting potential. It is a profession that combines subject knowledge, pedagogical skill and genuine passion for sport and physical activity. At Hartpury University you will study physical education and school sport over three years of full-time study, in an environment that offers purpose-built outdoor learning facilities and a sports academy providing excellent practical resources for your training. The programme is strengthened by partnerships with local schools, sports clubs and national bodies, giving you experience of supporting sporting events and developing your skills in real-world educational and sport development contexts. You will study sport science, pedagogy, curriculum planning, assessment and the professional responsibilities of a PE teacher, developing both subject knowledge and the teaching ability needed for schools. The typical tariff of 152 reflects a programme that attracts students with both academic capability and demonstrated commitment to sport and physical activity. Graduates of PE and school sport programmes often proceed to initial teacher education programmes to gain qualified teacher status, using their subject knowledge foundation as the basis for classroom practice. Many work in schools as PE teachers, progressing to head of department, assistant headship and leadership roles. Others work in sports development, coaching, community sport organisations, health promotion, sports administration and the wider physical activity and health sector. Postgraduate study in PE, sports science or coaching is available for graduates who want to develop specialist expertise.
