Physics is the study of matter, energy and the fundamental forces that govern the universe, from the tiniest subatomic particles to vast galaxies. Astrophysics is the study of the workings of stars, exoplanets, galaxies and black holes. The University of Leicester has a world-class reputation in astrophysics, particularly in the field of X-ray astronomy. In 1975 a Leicester-built instrument aboard the British Ariel 5 satellite identified one of the first confirmed stellar black holes; 34 years later a Leicester-led team of astrophysicists identified and studied the first ever intermediate mass black hole .
