MSci Physics with Theoretical Physics
About this course
Physics with theoretical physics is a degree for students who want to engage with the mathematical and conceptual foundations of physics at their deepest level. Theoretical physics seeks to understand the laws governing the natural world through mathematical modelling and abstract reasoning, pushing at the boundaries of what we know about quantum mechanics, relativity, field theory, cosmology, and the fundamental structure of matter and energy. It is one of the most intellectually demanding of all university subjects, and it develops mathematical and analytical capabilities of an exceptionally high order. At the University of Nottingham, this four-year full-time programme includes an integrated foundation year, providing a thorough grounding in mathematics and physics before you advance to the main degree. You will study the full range of undergraduate physics alongside advanced work in theoretical and mathematical physics, developing your ability to derive results, construct proofs, apply mathematical methods to physical problems, and engage with the cutting-edge questions of modern theoretical physics. Entry typically requires around 152 UCAS tariff points. Graduates of physics with theoretical physics are among the most analytically capable of all science graduates. They work in research, data science, finance, technology, engineering, defence, and any field that requires the ability to build and analyse mathematical models of complex systems. Many graduates continue to doctoral research in theoretical physics, mathematical physics, or related fields such as quantum information, cosmology, or condensed matter theory. The depth of mathematical training the degree provides is a significant advantage in the most competitive academic and professional environments.
