MPhys Physics with Theoretical Physics with research placement
About this course
Physics with theoretical physics is a degree that pushes beyond the standard curriculum of experimental and applied physics into the deep mathematical structures that underlie physical reality. Theoretical physics asks how the fundamental laws of nature can be expressed in the language of mathematics, and how those mathematical descriptions generate predictions about the behaviour of matter and energy that can be tested against experiment. It is one of the most intellectually demanding and rewarding areas of study in all of science. At the University of Bath this four-year full-time MPhys programme includes a research placement, giving you direct experience of working in a scientific research environment and developing the skills and instincts of a practising physicist. The range of final-year options is exceptionally broad, covering observational cosmology, high-energy astrophysical phenomena such as cosmic rays and black holes, new developments in electronics and photonics, the properties of materials at the nanoscale, and fibre photonics. This breadth allows you to direct your advanced study towards the areas of theoretical and applied physics that interest you most. Physics graduates at MPhys level are highly sought after across academia, research institutions, the technology sector, finance, data science, engineering and government. The research placement significantly strengthens applications for PhD programmes, where theoretical and computational physics graduates are consistently competitive. The mathematical rigour and problem-solving capability that theoretical physics develops transfer widely into quantitative roles in finance, data science, cryptography and technology. Teaching in physics, a subject in high demand in schools, is also a valued route for those who wish to engage the next generation.
