BSc Physiotherapy
About this course
Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession concerned with maximising physical movement and function across the lifespan. Physiotherapists assess and treat people whose mobility, strength or comfort has been affected by injury, illness, surgery or long-term conditions, using techniques that range from exercise and manual therapy to breathing retraining and neurological rehabilitation. They work across a wide range of clinical environments, from acute hospitals and community clinics to sports medicine settings and patients' own homes, and they play a central role in helping people recover from and manage a diverse array of physical and long-term health conditions. At the University of Cumbria this three-year full-time degree leads to registration with the Health and Care Professions Council, which you will achieve on graduation by meeting the HCPC's standards for entry to the register. The programme provides the skills and experience needed to qualify as a physiotherapist, combining academic learning in anatomy, physiology and evidence-based clinical practice with practical training in a range of placements. Working closely with qualified physiotherapists, you will develop the clinical reasoning, assessment and treatment skills needed to manage musculoskeletal, respiratory and neurological conditions across diverse practice settings. HCPC registration opens the door to work as a physiotherapist across the NHS and independent healthcare sector. Newly qualified physiotherapists typically begin in band 5 rotational posts that expose them to different clinical areas before they develop specialist expertise. Career progression can lead to senior and specialist physiotherapy roles, clinical leadership, management, education and research positions. The profession also offers clear pathways into private practice, sports and performance physiotherapy, international healthcare, occupational health and health policy roles.
