About this course

Politics and theology might appear to be separate fields, but they have been in conversation for as long as human communities have organised themselves. Politics examines how power is structured and contested, how institutions are designed and governed, and how competing visions of the good society are argued for and against. Theology asks what human beings have believed about the divine, the sacred, and ultimate meaning, and how those beliefs have shaped communities, moral frameworks, and political imagination. Studied together, the two disciplines illuminate each other: theology helps explain why political movements take the forms they do, and political analysis sheds light on how religious traditions are shaped by the communities that hold them. At the University of the Highlands and Islands you will explore the theories and history of political thought alongside an engagement with religious traditions, scripture, ethics, and the relationship between faith and public life. You will consider how religious institutions have exercised political power, how secular states have regulated religion, how theology has shaped debates about justice, rights, and human dignity, and how contemporary political movements draw on religious language and concepts. The programme is offered on a part-time basis, allowing you to study at a pace that suits other commitments. This combination of subjects prepares graduates for a range of careers in which understanding both political processes and the role of belief matters. The civil service, diplomacy, international development, NGOs, and faith-based organisations all value this combination. Journalism, education, social work, and community development also draw on the critical and ethical thinking these disciplines develop. Postgraduate study in political theology, ethics, public policy, international relations, or religious studies is a well-trodden path for those who want to build specialist expertise or pursue academic or research careers.
