About this course
Politics is the study of power: how it is acquired, exercised, contested, and constrained in human societies. It encompasses the formal institutions of government alongside the informal forces, movements, and ideologies that shape what governments do and what citizens believe. From climate action and migration policy to the future of democracy and the crisis of liberal capitalism, politics is the discipline that tries to make sense of the forces that are reshaping the world. At Leeds Beckett University, this part-time degree encourages you to question assumptions, challenge dominant narratives, and debate some of the most pressing and divisive issues facing society today. You will explore the ideas, power struggles, and political movements influencing societies around the world, examining topics including inequality, populism, global justice, environmental change, and the rise of political extremism. The programme is designed to develop critical thinking alongside the practical skills that employers value, with interactive learning, live projects, and exposure to political and professional contexts forming part of the experience. The degree also includes the option of a year abroad, extending your perspective beyond the UK and giving you direct experience of how political questions are understood and contested in other countries. Politics graduates develop skills that are valued across an exceptionally wide range of careers: the ability to analyse complex information, construct persuasive arguments, understand institutional and legal frameworks, and communicate clearly on contested issues. Careers in the civil service, local government, think tanks, journalism, campaigning organisations, international institutions, law, the charity sector, and business are all common destinations. Postgraduate study in politics, international relations, public policy, or law is a natural continuation for those who wish to deepen their knowledge or pursue particular areas of specialisation.
