BA Politics with International Relations (with Foundation Year)
About this course
Politics with international relations brings together two disciplines that are natural complements, examining the exercise of power both within and between states. Politics develops your understanding of political systems, ideologies, governance, democratic participation, and policy-making in domestic contexts. International relations extends that analysis to the global level, examining how states interact, why conflicts arise, how cooperation is achieved through international institutions, and what role non-state actors play in shaping global outcomes. Together they give you a rigorous analytical framework for understanding the political world in all its complexity. At Teesside University, this four-year full-time degree with a foundation year introduces you to the historical and contemporary development of social science disciplines, exploring theoretical frameworks and their practical application in society. The foundation year provides a supported entry for students who need additional academic preparation, building the research skills, ethical awareness, and interdisciplinary understanding needed to engage with the main degree. You will develop the ability to understand both the similarities and differences between disciplines, and how interdisciplinary approaches enrich the study of politics and international affairs. Graduates from politics with international relations programmes move into careers across many sectors. The civil service, diplomatic and foreign service, journalism, policy research, international organisations, NGOs, think tanks, political campaigning, and education are all well-established destinations. The analytical, research, and written communication skills developed through the degree are valued across many professions that require understanding complex systems and making arguments about public affairs. Postgraduate study in politics, international relations, security studies, or public policy is a natural continuation for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
