BA Portuguese and Linguistics
About this course
Portuguese and linguistics at Oxford brings together the study of one of the world's most widely spoken languages with a rigorous scientific investigation of how language itself works. Portuguese is spoken by over 250 million people across Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, and several other countries, and its literature spans centuries and continents, from the medieval lyric poetry of the Iberian Peninsula to the modernist experiments of Fernando Pessoa and the rich traditions of Brazilian and African writing. Linguistics, as a discipline, examines language not as a cultural artifact but as a cognitive and social phenomenon, asking questions about structure, acquisition, change, and variation. At Oxford, this four-year programme trains you in Portuguese to a high level of accuracy and confidence, covering literature, film, and culture across the full range of the Lusophone world, while the linguistics strand develops your understanding of phonology, syntax, semantics, language acquisition, sociolinguistics, and the relationship between language and cognition. The two strands are mutually enriching: studying Portuguese gives you a rich case study for linguistic analysis, while the tools of linguistics deepen and sharpen your engagement with Portuguese texts and their contexts. The programme's intellectual demands are considerable, and entry is highly competitive, typically requiring a tariff of around 184 points. Graduates of Portuguese and linguistics programmes are equipped for careers in diplomacy, translation and interpreting, international development, academia, journalism, publishing, and roles with organisations operating in Portuguese-speaking markets in Europe, South America, and Africa. The linguistic training opens additional pathways into speech and language therapy, language technology, and computational linguistics. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in linguistics, Portuguese and Brazilian studies, or area studies, and the analytical rigour developed at Oxford provides an excellent foundation for research at the highest level.
