BA Primary Education With Qts (School-Based)
About this course
Primary education at Key Stage 2, working with children aged five to eleven, is one of the most consequential of the teaching phases. The primary years are when children develop the foundational skills in literacy, numeracy and learning that will support their entire educational journey, and the quality of teaching they receive in this period has lasting effects on their confidence, curiosity and capability. Primary teachers need both strong subject knowledge across the broad primary curriculum and a deep understanding of child development, pedagogy and the craft of creating effective learning environments. This school-based route to Qualified Teacher Status at Edge Hill University is delivered in a part-time mode, allowing you to combine working or volunteering in a primary school with academic study. This model means you develop your professional skills and knowledge in a real school environment from the outset, making theory and practice inseparable throughout your training. You will develop the skills, knowledge and professional understanding required to inspire and teach children across the primary age range, including reading, writing, mathematics, science and the full range of primary curriculum subjects. The school-based element is central rather than supplementary. Graduates qualify to teach in primary schools as fully qualified teachers. Primary teaching is a career that offers intellectual challenge, creative rewards and a direct and visible impact on children's lives and futures. Career development opportunities include subject leadership, special educational needs coordination, curriculum leadership, early years coordination and school leadership through roles including deputy and head teacher. Many graduates continue to develop their professional knowledge through postgraduate study in education or specific curriculum areas over the course of their teaching careers.
