About this course

Product ceramics and jewellery is a studio-based design discipline that sits at the intersection of craft, material exploration, and three-dimensional design. It asks how objects can be made, how form, material, and function relate to one another, and how traditional making techniques can be combined with digital design and fabrication methods to produce work that is both technically accomplished and conceptually engaged. Ceramics and jewellery are among the oldest of the decorative arts, each with deep traditions of craft knowledge and aesthetic investigation, and each continuing to evolve in response to new materials, technologies, and design contexts. At Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, this four-year full-time degree provides the opportunity to explore product, ceramics, and jewellery through research, design development, and the innovative application of materials and processes. You will gain hands-on experience in workshops equipped with traditional making facilities alongside access to digital design and fabrication tools including CAD software and digital manufacturing equipment. The programme develops your skills in three-dimensional design thinking, material knowledge, and craft technique while encouraging you to investigate the conceptual and contextual dimensions of the objects you make, situating your practice within the wider traditions and contemporary developments of the field. Graduates work as jewellers, ceramicists, product and object designers, and makers, in roles including independent practice, working for design studios, product development companies, galleries and museums, and the luxury goods and jewellery industries. Teaching and community arts facilitation are also common pathways for graduates who want to share their craft expertise. Digital fabrication skills open additional routes into product design, prototyping, and design engineering contexts where three-dimensional making knowledge is valued. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in design, craft, or fine art, deepening their practice and building towards an academic or professional career in the discipline.
