BEng Product Design Engineering
About this course
Product design engineering sits at the productive boundary between creative design thinking and the technical disciplines of engineering. It asks how new products can be conceived with real users and use contexts in mind, how those ideas can be made real through rigorous engineering analysis and material selection, and how design and manufacture can work together to produce things that are useful, desirable, and sustainable. The field draws professionals who are equally comfortable sketching concepts and working through load calculations, and who understand that the best products emerge when design and engineering thinking are integrated from the outset. This four-year, full-time programme at the University of Glasgow leads to a Master of Engineering with Honours. You will work closely with industry throughout the programme, with opportunities for internships, fieldtrips to industrial centres of excellence, and engagement with professional engineering practice. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study in another country, encountering different engineering and design cultures and developing the international perspective that is increasingly valuable in a global industry. The programme develops both analytical depth and creative breadth, producing graduates who can function effectively at the intersection of design and engineering. Graduates work in product development, industrial design, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and innovation management across a wide range of sectors including consumer products, medical devices, transport, aerospace, and technology. Many move into roles that bridge design and engineering teams, valued precisely because they can communicate across both disciplines. The MEng qualification also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate research or further specialisation in engineering design, human factors, or advanced manufacturing. Professional registration with Engineering Council is a natural progression for those who wish to pursue chartered engineer status.
