BA Product Design
About this course
Product design is the discipline concerned with conceiving, developing, and bringing to life objects and systems that serve human needs. It combines creative thinking with technical knowledge, asking not just how something looks but how it works, how it is made, what it costs to produce, and what effect it has on the people who use it and on the broader environment. Good product design solves real problems and, at its best, improves lives while contributing to a more sustainable material world. At Leeds Beckett University, this three-year full-time BA develops your creative, technical, and professional skills across the full product design process. You will work from sketchbook concepts through to full-scale prototypes, engaging with furniture, consumer products, spatial interventions, and sustainable systems. The programme encourages you to think boldly and question convention, developing a distinct design identity while grounding your creativity in rigorous technical understanding. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement are all built into the programme, giving you substantial professional and international experience before you graduate. These elements are particularly important in a discipline where portfolio and professional network matter as much as academic qualifications to employers and clients. With a typical entry tariff of 104 UCAS points, the programme is designed to be accessible to creative and technically minded students. Product design graduates work across a wide range of sectors, from consumer electronics and furniture through to medical devices, packaging, transportation design, and sustainable products. Roles include product designer, industrial designer, design researcher, user experience designer, and design consultant, in companies ranging from large manufacturers to design agencies and start-ups. The technical and creative breadth of the degree also opens doors in related areas such as design management and innovation consultancy. Postgraduate study in product design, sustainability, or innovation is available for those who wish to deepen their expertise.
