BA Professional Accountancy
About this course
Professional accountancy is a degree designed with a clear vocational purpose: to prepare you for a career as a professional accountant, developing the knowledge, skills, and ethical understanding that the major professional accountancy bodies require. Accountancy is one of the most consistent and in-demand professions in any economy, concerned with the preparation, verification, and interpretation of financial information that organisations need to make sound decisions and meet their obligations. Professional accountants work in every sector, from large corporations and public practice to government, charities, and small businesses. At the University of Stirling this four-year full-time programme builds comprehensive knowledge of financial and management accounting, auditing, taxation, corporate finance, and business law alongside the analytical and professional skills that employers and professional bodies look for. A year abroad is incorporated into the degree, giving you an international perspective on accounting practice and the opportunity to study at a partner institution in another country. The professional accountancy orientation means the programme is aligned with the requirements of bodies such as the ICAEW, ACCA, and ICAS, and graduates who meet the criteria may be eligible for exemptions from certain professional examinations, reducing the time and cost of qualifying after graduation. Graduates from professional accountancy programmes go on to careers in public practice, working in audit, tax, or advisory services for firms of chartered accountants, as well as in commercial roles within businesses across every sector. Management accounting, financial planning and analysis, and treasury are common paths within organisations. The public sector also recruits professional accountants in significant numbers, and charities and other non-profit organisations depend on qualified finance professionals too. For those wishing to pursue research or academic careers in accounting, a postgraduate degree provides the further preparation needed.
