BSc Psychology and Marketing
About this course
Psychology and Marketing is a combination that has become increasingly relevant as businesses seek to understand not just what consumers do but why they do it. Psychology brings the scientific study of human behaviour, cognition, and motivation to bear on questions about decision-making, persuasion, and the social dynamics that shape how people respond to brands, messages, and products. Marketing draws on that understanding to develop strategies for reaching and influencing people effectively. Together the two disciplines create a graduate with both the scientific rigour of a psychologist and the commercial intelligence of a marketer. At Heriot-Watt University, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad and covers core content in both disciplines, ensuring that you graduate with genuine depth in each rather than a superficial acquaintance with both. In psychology you will study cognitive, social, developmental, and biological psychology, alongside research methods that give you the ability to investigate questions about behaviour rigorously. In marketing you will explore consumer behaviour, brand strategy, market research, digital marketing, and communications, developing the commercial and strategic thinking that employers look for. The connections between the two disciplines are a consistent thread through the programme, as Heriot-Watt's own description notes: understanding people is central to effective marketing, and marketing provides a rich applied context for psychological research. The year abroad broadens your perspective and strengthens your adaptability, both qualities that employers in international and consumer-facing businesses value. Graduates are well placed for careers in marketing strategy and brand management, consumer insight and market research, advertising and communications, UX research, digital marketing, HR and organisational behaviour, and management consulting. Some continue to postgraduate study in psychology, marketing, or business.
