BSc Psychology and Sociology
About this course
Psychology and sociology are disciplines that approach the understanding of human beings from complementary angles, one focusing on the individual and the other on the structures and processes of social life. Psychology is a science of mind and behaviour, asking how people perceive, think, feel, and act. Sociology is a social science of collectivities, asking how groups, institutions, culture, and power shape the lives of individuals and the character of societies. Studied together, they provide an unusually rich framework for understanding human experience, and the combination is particularly valuable for anyone interested in the relationship between personal lives and social context. At Aberystwyth University, this three-year full-time degree gives you the opportunity to engage with psychological theory and research while exploring how psychology is applied to real-world personal and social questions. You will also analyse social phenomena through training in the collection and interpretation of sociological data, developing a dual methodological toolkit that includes both quantitative psychological research methods and the qualitative approaches more common in sociological inquiry. The typical entry tariff of 104 points reflects the broad entry base for this combined programme. You will develop the capacity to think across disciplinary boundaries, to design and conduct research, and to engage with evidence from different methodological traditions. The programme cultivates critical thinking, analytical rigour, and the ability to communicate complex findings about human behaviour and social processes to diverse audiences. Graduates pursue careers in social research, health and social care, education, community development, marketing, human resources, public policy, and the voluntary sector. The combination of psychological science and sociological analysis is particularly valuable in roles that require understanding both individual behaviour and social context. Postgraduate routes include clinical, counselling, educational, and forensic psychology, as well as sociology, social policy, and social work.
