About this course

Psychology and sociology address the same territory, namely human behaviour and social life, but from complementary angles that turn out to be mutually illuminating. Psychology examines what happens inside individuals: how they perceive, think, feel, remember, and develop, and what goes wrong when mental processes are disrupted. Sociology zooms out to the level of social structures, institutions, and patterns, asking how inequalities are reproduced, how norms are formed and enforced, and how collective life shapes individual experience. Studying them together gives you a richer and more complete picture of why people do what they do than either discipline can provide on its own. At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, which gives you the opportunity to study psychology and sociology in a different academic and cultural environment. The comparative perspective this enables, seeing how social structures and psychological norms differ across societies, is one of the most valuable things the year abroad can offer in these disciplines. Throughout the programme, you will develop both theoretical knowledge and research skills, learning to design studies, collect and analyse data using quantitative and qualitative methods, and communicate findings clearly. You will engage with the major theoretical traditions of both disciplines and develop your capacity to apply them to contemporary social problems. A typical entry tariff of 168 points reflects the academic demands of the combined programme at one of Scotland's long-established research universities. Graduates work in mental health services, social work, human resources, policy, education, research, the charity sector, and journalism. Many continue to postgraduate study in psychology, clinical training, social research, or sociology, where the broad and rigorous foundation this degree provides is highly valued.
