BA Psychology and Spanish
About this course
Psychology and Spanish is a combination that develops two disciplines with very different methods but a shared concern with human beings: how they think, how they feel, how they communicate, and how culture shapes the way they experience the world. Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, using experimental methods and theory to examine cognition, emotion, social behaviour, and individual differences. Spanish gives you access to the language and culture of Spain and Latin America, two of the world's richest and most diverse cultural regions, and develops your capacity to communicate and think across cultural and linguistic boundaries. At the University of Strathclyde, you will study both disciplines over four years full-time, developing your psychological knowledge and research skills alongside your Spanish to a high level of proficiency. The psychology strand examines how people learn, remember, act, and relate to one another, and why there are such significant differences between individuals, covering the core areas of the discipline from social and cognitive psychology to clinical and developmental psychology. The Spanish strand develops your language skills in parallel, engaging with the literatures and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. The four-year programme structure gives you the time to develop genuine competence in both disciplines. The typical entry tariff is 200 UCAS points. Graduates of this combination are well placed for careers in clinical and counselling settings with Spanish-speaking communities, in international organisations, in research with a cross-cultural or Latin American dimension, in education, in translation, and in roles in business and public service that require both Spanish and an understanding of human behaviour. The British Psychological Society's graduate membership, which the degree supports, is the standard first step for those pursuing chartered psychologist status. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in psychology, Spanish, or translation.
