About this course

Psychology, counselling and coaching share a concern with understanding and supporting human mental and emotional life, but they approach that concern from different angles. Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, providing the empirical and theoretical foundations for understanding how people think, feel and act. Counselling applies those insights in a therapeutic relationship, supporting individuals through emotional difficulties, mental health challenges and personal crises. Coaching, often more focused on goal achievement and performance, draws on similar psychological principles to help people develop their potential and navigate life transitions. Studying all three together gives you a broad and integrative understanding of human wellbeing and the professional practices that support it. This four-year full-time degree at the University of Bedfordshire includes a foundation year, which develops the academic and psychological knowledge needed before you progress into the main degree. Specialist units have been developed in collaboration with industry professionals from the NHS, mental health support organisations and other relevant bodies, ensuring that the programme reflects the realities of professional practice. Throughout the degree you will develop your knowledge of psychological science alongside practical skills in counselling and coaching approaches, and you will engage with the ethical frameworks that govern work with vulnerable people. Graduates are prepared for roles in counselling support, mental health services, coaching practice, human resources, occupational health, education and the voluntary sector. Those who wish to become qualified counsellors or psychologists will need additional postgraduate training and supervised practice, and the undergraduate degree provides a strong foundation for those routes. The combination of psychological knowledge, counselling skills and coaching practice is also valued in management development, leadership coaching, community support and wellbeing roles in a wide range of organisations.
