BSc Psychology
About this course
Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, concerned with understanding why people think, feel, and act as they do. It is a discipline that sits at the meeting point of natural science and the humanities, combining rigorous experimental methods with the study of human experience, relationships, and social contexts. From cognitive processes and brain function to personality, development, and the dynamics of groups and societies, psychology addresses questions that are both intellectually fascinating and directly relevant to everyday life. This three-year, full-time programme at Edge Hill is accredited by the British Psychological Society, which means it can count towards graduate basis for chartered membership, an important qualification for those who wish to pursue a career in professional psychology. You will study across the major areas of the discipline, including biological, cognitive, social, and developmental psychology, and develop skills in research design, statistical analysis, and scientific writing. The course includes a placement year and a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to apply psychological knowledge in a professional context and to engage with the discipline in a different national and academic setting. Psychology graduates move into an exceptionally wide range of careers. The professional psychology routes, including clinical, educational, occupational, forensic, and health psychology, all require further postgraduate training after the undergraduate degree, and the BPS-accredited degree provides the foundation for those pathways. Beyond professional psychology, graduates work in human resources, marketing, health promotion, social care, teaching, research, and public policy, drawing on the understanding of human behaviour and the analytical skills the degree develops. The combination of a placement year and a year abroad adds professional and international experience that strengthens graduates' profiles considerably.
