BA Psychology
About this course
Psychology is the scientific study of human thought, behaviour, and experience, asking why people think, feel, and act as they do, and how mental processes relate to the biological, social, and cultural contexts in which they occur. It is a discipline that ranges from the molecular mechanisms of perception to the dynamics of large social groups, and from developmental patterns in childhood to the effects of mental illness across the lifespan. Studying psychology means engaging with both the theoretical frameworks that organise knowledge in the field and the empirical methods used to generate and test that knowledge. At the University of Essex, which has a strong reputation for research-informed teaching and for engaging with real societal challenges, this four-year BA (Hons) programme provides an immersive and rigorous experience of studying human psychology. You will explore cognitive psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, neuroscience, biological psychology, and research methods, building the knowledge and skills needed to understand and investigate human behaviour systematically. The four-year structure gives you additional time to develop your expertise and engage more deeply with the subject, and Essex's emphasis on innovative, solution-focused research means you will engage with psychology in contexts that connect directly to contemporary social issues. Psychology is one of the most popular degree subjects in the UK, and its graduates enter a very wide range of careers. Those who wish to work as professional psychologists, whether in clinical, educational, forensic, occupational, or counselling psychology, will need further postgraduate training after the degree. Many graduates, however, enter careers in human resources, marketing, management, social research, healthcare, the voluntary sector, and public policy, where an understanding of human behaviour is genuinely valuable. The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in psychology or a related social science.
