BSc Psychology
About this course
Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour, asking how and why people think, feel, and act as they do. It draws on experimental methods, statistics, and a rich body of theory to investigate topics ranging from perception and memory to personality, social influence, mental health, and development across the lifespan. It is one of the most popular and most versatile degree subjects in UK higher education, combining intellectual rigour with direct relevance to understanding people in almost every context. At the University of Portsmouth, this three-year full-time BSc (Hons) Psychology degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), providing the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership needed for postgraduate training routes in professional psychology. You will study the mind and behaviour across core areas of the discipline, examining how people think, act, and feel through a combination of lectures, seminars, and practical research work. The programme includes a sandwich year with a year abroad and work placement, giving you the opportunity to apply psychological knowledge in a professional environment and to study in an international context. Entry typically requires around 120 UCAS tariff points. Psychology graduates go on to a very wide range of careers. Those who wish to become practising psychologists continue to postgraduate training in clinical, educational, forensic, occupational, health, or sport and exercise psychology. Others work in human resources, marketing and consumer research, social work, counselling, teaching, management, public health, and research. The analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills the degree develops are transferable across virtually every professional sector.
