About this course

Psychology with cognitive neuroscience combines the scientific study of mind and behaviour with the investigation of how the brain gives rise to mental processes. Psychology provides the theoretical and empirical frameworks for understanding perception, attention, memory, language, emotion, social behaviour and development, while cognitive neuroscience brings the tools of neuroscience, including brain imaging, neuropsychology and computational modelling, to bear on these same questions at the level of the nervous system. Together they offer one of the most complete frameworks currently available for understanding human cognition. Goldsmiths, University of London has a distinctive character in British higher education, with a strong tradition of connecting social and cultural perspectives to the sciences of mind. This three-year full-time degree reflects that character while providing rigorous training in both psychological research methods and the neuroscientific approaches that have transformed the field in recent decades. You will study the core areas of psychology alongside specialist content in cognitive neuroscience, covering topics such as visual perception, attention, memory systems, language processing, decision-making and the neural correlates of consciousness. You will develop strong quantitative and research skills and learn to evaluate empirical evidence critically. The combination of these disciplines trains a distinctive kind of scientific thinking, one that must move between behavioural observations, computational models and neural evidence, evaluating what each level of description can and cannot tell us about the mind. Graduates pursue careers in clinical and health psychology, neuropsychological rehabilitation, research, human factors and user experience, data science, education and the technology sector. The degree also provides an excellent foundation for postgraduate study in cognitive neuroscience, clinical psychology, neuroimaging, computational modelling or any field that builds on a rigorous understanding of mind, brain and behaviour.
