About this course

Psychology and counselling together address two of the most important questions in understanding human wellbeing: how do people think and feel, and how can that knowledge be used to support those who are struggling. Psychology provides the scientific foundations, drawing on research into cognition, emotion, development, and social behaviour to explain how the mind works and why things sometimes go wrong. Counselling offers a practical application of those insights, focusing on the relational skills and therapeutic approaches that allow practitioners to help people through bereavement, trauma, illness, relationship difficulties, and the many other experiences that can make life feel unmanageable. At the University of Huddersfield, this three-year, full-time BSc programme combines the theory of psychology with practical counselling approaches, helping you build the skills required to support people in need. You will develop a grounding in the core areas of psychological science, including biological, cognitive, developmental, and social psychology, alongside study of counselling models, therapeutic relationship skills, and the ethical frameworks that govern helping work. The combination develops your ability to understand people both analytically and empathically, and to bring evidence-based thinking to the practice of support. Graduates go on to careers in mental health services, counselling, social care, the charity sector, education, and healthcare, taking on roles that require both psychological knowledge and interpersonal skill. Many pursue further professional training to qualify as counsellors, therapists, or chartered psychologists, working in the NHS, private practice, or voluntary organisations. Others go into roles in occupational psychology, human resources, education welfare, or research. Postgraduate study in psychology, counselling, or social work is a natural route for those who wish to specialise further.
