BSc Psychology with Counselling
About this course
Psychology with counselling is a degree that equips you for a professional world where understanding the mind and being able to work therapeutically with people in distress are increasingly valued alongside each other. Psychology as a science investigates cognition, emotion, behaviour, and the biological and social factors that shape human experience. Counselling adds a relational and skills-based dimension, focusing on the therapeutic relationship, active listening, empathic responding, and the person-centred approach that underpins much contemporary counselling practice. At Keele this three-year full-time programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society, giving you graduate basis for chartered membership, the essential first step toward professional training as a psychologist. You will build the core scientific knowledge of psychology alongside advanced skills applicable to specialist careers in helping and therapeutic settings, developing the ability to work effectively with clients and to understand how people think, feel, and communicate. The counselling component is integrated throughout the programme, ensuring that you develop practical therapeutic skills as well as scientific understanding. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities give you professional and international experience that enrich your training. Graduates are well placed for careers in counselling, mental health support, psychology, social care, education, community services, and a wide range of helping professions. Those wishing to practise as psychologists will need to complete further postgraduate training, and the BPS accreditation means the Keele degree provides the academic foundation for that route. Many graduates also go on to counselling training, or into roles in health, education, and the voluntary sector where the combination of psychological knowledge and therapeutic skills is directly applicable.
