BSc Psychology with Forensic Perspectives
About this course
Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour, examining how people think, feel, perceive, remember, and act, both individually and in social contexts. Forensic psychology applies these ideas to legal and criminal settings, exploring questions about why people offend, how witnesses remember and report events, how suspects are interviewed, how juries make decisions, and how risk is assessed in criminal justice and forensic contexts. The combination gives you a thorough grounding in psychological science alongside a focused understanding of how it applies in some of the most high-stakes settings imaginable. At Teesside University, this part-time programme develops your ability to read and evaluate psychological information, theories, and research papers critically. You will examine cognitive biases and the kinds of systematic errors people make when assessing arguments and evidence, which is especially important when applying psychological knowledge in forensic and legal contexts where the consequences of misjudgement can be severe. The part-time mode allows you to study alongside other commitments while building the conceptual and analytical skills that are central to both academic psychology and professional practice. The knowledge and skills you develop are relevant to a range of careers that sit at the intersection of psychology and the justice system. Many graduates move into work in the probation service, prison service, youth offending teams, and secure mental health settings. Others pursue roles in social work, victim support, advocacy, and community safety. Some go on to postgraduate study in forensic psychology, clinical psychology, criminology, or law, which opens further doors in specialist practice and research. The degree also provides a strong general preparation for any career that values careful reasoning, the ability to evaluate evidence, and an understanding of human behaviour in complex and pressured environments.
