About this course

Quantity Surveying is the professional discipline concerned with the financial and contractual management of construction projects. Quantity surveyors are the cost managers and commercial advisers of the built environment, responsible for estimating and controlling costs, managing contracts, ensuring that projects deliver value for money and that they meet the legal and quality standards that clients and regulators expect. The profession is integral to every significant construction project, from residential developments and commercial buildings to major infrastructure programmes, and it spans the full project lifecycle from initial feasibility through design, procurement, construction and handover. At London South Bank University, this part-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities, giving students a supported entry route into the profession and substantial practical experience alongside their academic studies. You will develop a strong foundation in construction technology, property law and project management, alongside the organisational and cost control skills that are central to professional quantity surveying practice. The foundation year provides the scaffolding needed by students who are entering the profession from a different background, and the combination of part-time study and placement experience is well-suited to those who are building professional experience while studying. Quantity Surveying graduates are in consistent demand across the construction, development and infrastructure sectors. Roles as quantity surveyor, cost manager, project manager, contracts manager and commercial manager are all natural destinations. The profession is highly structured around chartered status, and many graduates work towards RICS qualification (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) or equivalent professional recognition during their early careers. Public sector bodies, construction companies, project management consultancies, developers and specialist consultancies all employ quantity surveyors in significant numbers.
