About this course

Real estate is a substantial component of national and global wealth, and its management, valuation and development require a professional expertise that combines knowledge of economics, law, finance, planning and the physical characteristics of property. Real estate professionals advise on the buying, selling, leasing and management of commercial, residential, industrial and leisure properties in the UK and internationally, and they play a central role in development projects that shape the built environment. It is a discipline with significant practical and commercial importance, and one in which professional qualifications matter considerably. At the Royal Agricultural University, this three-year full-time degree gives you the opportunity to examine the full complexity of the property market across its different sectors. You will study the economics of property markets, the legal frameworks that govern property transactions and tenancies, valuation methods and the financial analysis of investment decisions, planning and development processes, and the management of property portfolios. The RAU's specialist land-based character means you will engage with rural and agricultural property alongside urban commercial and residential sectors, giving you a broader understanding of the real estate profession than many programmes provide. Professional practice and commercial awareness are built throughout the degree. You will develop the analytical, negotiation and communication skills that property professionals use in their daily work, and you will engage with real-world case studies and market analysis. Many real estate degrees are structured to support accreditation with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, which is the principal professional body in this field. Graduates move into chartered surveying, property development, investment management, asset management, planning consultancy, facilities management, and valuations. Professional qualification through the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence is the typical route to chartered status after graduation, and postgraduate study is also an option for those who wish to specialise further.
