About this course

Robotics and artificial intelligence represent two of the most rapidly developing fields in modern technology, and they are deeply interconnected. Robotics is concerned with the design, construction, programming and operation of physical systems that can perform tasks autonomously or semi-autonomously in the real world. Artificial intelligence provides the computational methods that allow these systems to perceive their environments, learn from experience, make decisions and interact with people and objects in flexible and intelligent ways. Together they are transforming manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, agriculture, defence and everyday life. At the University of Hull this programme takes a strongly hands-on approach, giving you direct experience of programming and constructing robotic systems in an industry-standard robotics lab. You will work with DJI drones, Turtlebot3 mobile robots and humanoid platforms including Baxter, Nao and Pepper, developing practical competence alongside the theoretical foundations in computer science, machine learning, computer vision and control systems that underpin professional work in the field. The programme includes a study abroad element, running over four years full time, which gives you the opportunity to experience robotics and AI education in a different national and institutional context. You will develop competence in programming, robot kinematics, sensor integration, machine learning, computer vision and autonomous system design. The ability to move between theoretical understanding and practical implementation is central to the programme and to the profession. Graduates from robotics and AI programmes move into careers in automation engineering, software development for intelligent systems, drone technology, manufacturing automation, research and development, and the technology industry more broadly. The combination of physical engineering skills and AI competence is particularly valuable in the growing field of autonomous systems. Postgraduate study in robotics, AI, computer science or a related engineering discipline is also a natural route for those wanting to specialise further or pursue research.
