BSc Science of Sport Performance
About this course
The science of sport performance is an interdisciplinary field concerned with understanding and improving the way athletes function at their physical and psychological limits. It draws on physiology, biomechanics, nutrition science, and psychology to ask how the body and mind respond to training and competition, and how support systems can be designed to push performance further while keeping athletes healthy and sustainable in their development. The field matters not only for elite sport but for any setting where systematic improvement in human physical performance is the goal. At Leeds Beckett University, this part-time programme is designed to give you an immersive experience of the science underlying peak performance, combining theoretical study with laboratory work and real-world experience. You will examine how the body adapts to different training demands, how nutrition affects energy systems and recovery, how psychological factors influence performance under pressure, and how biomechanical analysis can identify both efficiencies and risks in movement patterns. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, giving you professional experience in a high-performance sport environment and exposure to performance science practices in an international context. The combination of analytical depth and practical application is what produces graduates who can make a measurable difference in sporting environments. Graduates go on to careers as sport scientists, performance analysts, strength and conditioning coaches, sport nutritionists, and athlete support practitioners in professional sport clubs, national governing bodies, high-performance centres, and elite sporting academies. The skills you develop are also applicable in fitness, rehabilitation, and health promotion contexts. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in sport science, strength and conditioning, exercise physiology, or sport psychology to develop deeper specialisation and access more senior roles in high-performance settings.
